Educator Science Cafe – S.C. Sea Grant Consortium & Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum

12/05/2019 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
247 Congress St
Charleston, SC 29403

On December 5, 2019, join the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum at Harold’s Cabin from 5-7PM for the first cafe of our 2019-2020 series: Somewhere Beyond the Sea. For our first cafĂ©, interact with ocean scientists who implement creative methods to study the depths of the ocean. Whether deploying electronic equipment to high pressure aquatic environments or mapping unexplored ocean bottoms, marine scientists have to get creative with their methodologies. What is it about these systems that draw us to them? What do we stand to learn from our oceans? Our first panel of scientists will help us find out!

  • Dr. Scott Harris (College of Charleston) will address mapping techniques from multi-beam sonar to drones that help scientists understand where and what to study (and explore!).
  • Dr. Peter Etnoyer (NOAA) will share his expertise on how scientists study deep sea corals and the ecology of hard-bottom communities.
  • Dr. Jeff Hyland (NOAA) will discuss sampling techniques of the soft benthos and the organisms that live there.

For just $10, enjoy conversations with local scientists and experts, heavy appetizers, and be eligible for prizes and give-aways! Tickets now available for purchase.

This event is applicable for educators who cover standards relating to oceans and landforms, ecosystems, ecology, or geology.
